Important Information:
Brain biopsies for diagnosis of possible metabolic or unknown disease processes generally require coordinated efforts between several laboratories in order for the maximum information to be derived from the material. Thus, the plan of study in each case should be determined in advance of the biopsy. The tissue specimen, which should be a 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 cm piece of brain including meninges, cortex and underlying white matter, should be brought to the Blake 3 Frozen Section Laboratory immediately upon removal, unless some other plan has previously been agreed upon. As soon as the decision is made to do a brain biopsy, the Staff Neuropathologist on call (x6-5156 or page beeper#21332) should be notified, so that the necessary coordinated efforts may be carried out. Such studies include culture, electron microscopy, immunological, molecular and biochemical. Minimum result time is 3 hours (immunofluorescence) to 72 hours or more, depending on the type of study.
