Important Information:
Breast biopsies for estrogen, progesterone, HER-2 receptors:

All FNA, core, excision and mastectomy specimens that contain carcinoma will undergo immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR and Her-2. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization will be performed on all Her-2 immunohistochemical stains that are deemed equivocal. The pathologist will make one telephone call to the extension designated on the requisition, to report results of breast biopsy examination. If the surgeon has left the OR, it is his/her responsibility to call x6-7903 to obtain results.

Breast biopsies for special studies:

Flow cytometric analysis can be performed on invasive breast carcinomas when specifically requested by a clinical service. This analysis utilizes paraffin embedded tumor tissue and cannot proceed until a final histologic diagnosis has been rendered. Retrospective analysis is therefore possible. Flow cytometry will provide data on tumor ploidy and, when possible, cell turnover (S-phase). Results will be available via the surgical pathology report, listed in the form of an addendum. For further questions, please contact Dr. Debra Bell (x6-3959) or Dr. Fred Preffer (x6-7481)
