Important Information:
The specimen should consist of 1.0 cm long and 0.5 cm in diameter longitudinally oriented cylinder of muscle, moderately involved by disease process. Severely involved muscle will display non-specific endstage changes, while changes in mildly affected muscle may be too focal and/or subtle for accurate diagnosis. Avoid tendinous insertions and injection or electromyographic puncture sites. Electron microscopy is performed on selected biopsies upon request. For this purpose, an additional 1.0 cm x 0.5 cm diameter longitudinally oriented cylinder of muscle is needed.

Routine histological, histochemical, and electron microscopy studies are carried out by the Neuropathology Laboratory Unit between 8am and 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. After hours, please page the Neuropathology Resident on call. The laboratory should be notified at least one hour before the biopsy is scheduled (Ms. Holly Goolsby, x6-3798). If electron microscopy is to be carried out, the laboratory should be notified 24 hours beforehand. Specimens will be picked up in the operating room by laboratory personnel (Ms. Holly Goolsby, x6-3798). Minimum result time is 24 hours (histochemistry) or 1-4 weeks (electron microscopy).
