Important Information:
Specimens should be sent fresh (not fixed) by transport directly to the Pathology Frozen Section Laboratory located on Blake 3. Biopsies can regularly be processed from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. After laboratory hours or in emergency situations, biopsy specimens may be processed at other times by contacting the Pathology Resident on call. A minimum of five (5) tissue fragments are needed for an adequate biopsy. The requisition form accompanying the specimen should indicate that the specimen is to be RUSHED. If humoral rejection is suspected, the form should request immunofluorescence for C4d. If amyloid is suspected, the form should request amyloid subtyping by immunofluorescence. Note that performing immunofluorescence requires fresh tissue that has not been fixed in formalin.
