Needle biopsies should be scheduled with the Immunopathology Laboratory, Warren 5 (Mr. Bernard Collins, x6-8444 or Ms. Christie Swett, x4-1264), preferably 24 hours in advance, and performed between 8:30am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. In emergency situations, biopsy specimens may be processed at other times by contacting the Pathology Resident on call (x6-2967 or page x6-2241). Specimen fixation and preparation for routine histologic immunofluorescence and electron microscopic examination will be performed by personnel from the Immunopathology Laboratory, who will come to the operating room, patientís bedside or Blake 3 Frozen Section Laboratory to pick up the specimen. Open renal biopsy and nephrectomy specimens for immunopathologic examination should be scheduled and handled similarly. Specimens should never be placed in formalin in the OR. The routine Pathology requisition should indicate the time of biopsy and the relevant clinical history and clinical findings. Minimum result time is 24-48 hours.
