Important Information:
If concern exists for systemic mastocytosis, measurement of total and mature tryptase (TBTRY) should be ordered instead of this test. This test measures levels of total tryptase only and may be appropriate if evaluating anaphylaxis. Elevated baseline total tryptase levels can occur in systemic mastocytosis, acute myelocytic leukemia, hypereosinophilic syndrome associated with the FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion mutation, refractory anemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, end stage kidney failure and administration of rSCF. Following anaphylaxis, total tryptase levels may become elevated from baseline within 30-60 minutes and subsequently decline back to baseline with a half life of about two hours.
