Urine should be collected in a container with 5 g sodium carbonate added as a preservative at the start of collection. This preservative is intended to achieve a pH of >7.

Important Information:
A timed (24 hour) urine is the preferred test during symptomatic periods for acute intermittent porphyria, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria. Testing includes porphobilinogen.
