DIRECTOR: Vivian E. Shih, M.D. LOCATION - MGH EAST, 149 6310, (6-West)
The Neurochemistry Laboratory is located at MGH East, Building 149, Charlestown,
6th floor, West, and operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5pm. Specimens
are delivered to the laboratory from the Main Campus via the Phlebotomy/Transport
Service. The last transportation van of the day leaves the Main Campus at approximately
3 pm. When the laboratory is closed, or when transportation is not available,
specimens should be stored in a refrigerator and delivered as soon as possible.
The tests offered by this laboratory are primarily for the detection of hereditary
metabolic disorders of amino acids, organic acids and sugars. Quantitative determinations
of plasma and urine amino acids are available for monitoring patients on dietary
treatment, hyperalimentation and other medications. Certain drugs may interfere
with testing; examples are antibiotics and dyes used for radiographical studies.
Thus, medication and clinical information should be included on the requisition
for proper interpretation of results, and to help determine which additional
tests may be appropriate.
Criteria for Refusal of Specimens - The laboratory
reserves the right to refuse specimens considered unsuitable (e.g.,
urine specimens contaminated with fecal material, badly hemolyzed
blood).
Results
Laboratory personnel will call the requesting area or physician when a metabolic
disorder which requires prompt attention is suspected. Upon completion of testing,
written reports are mailed to the requesting area and ordering physician, so
please clearly indicate the mailing address for all reports. For further information
or questions, or to arrange for priority testing, you may call the following
individuals: Vivian E. Shih, M.D., or Ms. Roseann Mandell at 617-726-3884 (FAX:
