The Chemistry Laboratory operates 7 days/week, 24 hours/day.

Description
The Chemistry Laboratory is responsible for handling requests for any laboratory service that is not available through MGH clinical laboratories.

Critical Values
Critical values are called to the ordering location in accordance with the MGH Critical Values policy.

Criteria for Refusal of Specimens

• Specimen not labeled
• Name on specimen and requisition do not agree
• Quantity Not Sufficient (QNS) for testing
• Specimen unsuitable for testing – hemolyzed, too old, clotted
• Date of Specimen unknown
• Improperly sealed or leaking container

Chemistry Toxicology Service
The Chemistry Laboratory offers serum and urine toxicology services 24 hours a day (see “serum toxicology panel” and “toxicology screen, urine” in the index of tests).
